Seminar 4: Activism and Identity

section | label

Stuart Hall argues that Thatcherism can be best understood as an ideological marriage between economics and morality. This seminar will look at the ways in which, sexuality and law and order were played out in parliament. The new campaigns also brought together groups that recognised shared interests. Again cultural resistance was particularly important, but so too were more violent forms of protest. Both the poll tax and Clause 28 potentially criminalised previously law abiding citizens. Football hooliganism and the emergence of rave culture can both be read as forms of resistance, and were both met with particular legal measures.

Below you will find separate Key reading depending which group you are in: Greenham, Football, Poll Tax, Clause 28/AIDS or Rave and New Age Travellers.

Some questions to think about

resource | html

This week's seminar will be group workshops

Answer the following questions

What sort different types of politics do we see in these campaigns?

How does this relate to the work of specific historians?

What is the relationship between form and content, (how what a group wants relates to how they organise to get it)?

How do we evaluate the success of a campaign or movement?
