This week’s seminar will use the miners' strike to look at
the causes and experiences of unemployment in the 1980s, thinking about turning
points in the strike and the issue of the ballot. Using Orgreave as a case
study we will focus on the role of the press and news reportage in public
perceptions of the strike. Students may also choose to explore the networks and
allegiences forged through experiences of the strike.
